Engagement with Industry

REEdI are honoured to have over 40 Industry Partners involved in the project from content development, site visits, guest lecturers and placement opportunites. This collaboration goes from strength to strength and reached a big milestone this September with the commencement of the paid work placement with our third year student engineers.

We have worked with our industry partners to develop a range of micro-credentials and lifelong learning courses

This semester we have welcomed a number of guest lecturers to speak with out Student Engineer as well as undertaking site visits to our industry partners to enhance their knowledge of the world of engineering and the opportunities available to them on graduation.

A highlight of the year was our REEdI Engineering Symposium, now in its second year, which was held in November as part of Kerry Science Festival.

REEdI Engineering Symposium

The REEdI@MTU team were delighted to hold our second annual REEdI Engineering Symposium at the Rose Hotel, Tralee. This year’s theme was ‘Collaborating for the Future’, we welcomed over 100 people from industry, academics and students to discover the REEdI project. At the heart of the event were the REEdI students from the Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. These students, known for their forward-thinking and innovation, showcased their course projects, the event provided a platform for them to connect with industry partners, opening up opportunities for work placements in their third and forth year and future career paths.

As well as showcasing the second year students’ work and capabilities, attendees had the opportunity to hear from current third year students and their industry mentors on their work placement experience. The team also showcased innovative ways we are assisting industry partners and students while on their placement including through a specialised app.

During the Symposium we are thrilled to announce the winners of the REEdI Student Awards, Gearoid Costello won Best Presentation and Christian Karamagi won Best Poster.

Industry Partner Collaboration

Our Industry Partners play a big part in the success of the REEdI Project, they support the ongoing design, development and continuous improvement of the REEdI framework ensuring we produce the caliber of graduates needed to meet future manufacturing engineering skills requirements. In addition to this, they welcome our students on site visits, visit MTU to provide guest lectures and have the opportunity to have a REEdI Student on placement for their third and forth year.

This year we created a video to highlight the importance of this collaboration and how it positively affects the project, our students and industry partners.

As our cohort of Student Engineers grows each year, so does our need for additional industry partners. If you would like to find out more about becoming an industry partner find out more here or contact us.

REEdI Student Engineers’ Placements

We were excited to see our first cohort of REEdI Student Engineers embark on their 2 years work placement with our industry partners. 17 students were placed with 14 companies around Ireland, the UK and Europe. The students worked hard during their second year to secure these placements, engaging with the work placement co-ordinator to create CVs, make connections with industry partners and prepare for interviews. We wish them the best of luck as they undertake this milestone in their engineering education journeys.

Guest Lecturers & Site Visits

Throughout the academic year REEdI are welcomed on site visit to world class industries across Ireland. The team and student engineers also host a broad range of guest lecturers who share their knowledge and experience. It is important for the students to witness and hear from industry experts and discover more about the careers and oppotunities available to them. Some of our recent highlights were:

  • Flow Technology
  • MTU STEM Building with JJ Rhatigan
  • Stryker Macroom
  • Noel Cronin, Learning Technologies Lead at Takeda
  • Monika Dukarska, Olympic Rower

BSc (Hons) in Integrated Manufacturing Engineering

The REEdI team were excited to be involved in the development of the new BSc (Honours) in Integrated Manufacturing Engineering at MTU Kerry Campus. This 2 year, part-time programme has been designed to meet the needs of up-skilling employees in the manufacturing sector. The aim of the programme to produce graduates of high calibre who possess a thorough knowledge of scientific principles and engineering practice who can work in and lead engineering teams and projects within the manufacturing sector.

The programme is comprised of two minor awards; the Certificate in Industry 4.0 and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and Certificate in Integrated Manufacturing Engineering Management. These programmes can be undertaken separately and stacked to gain the BSc (Hons) in Integrated Manufacturing. The Certificate in Integrated Manufacturing Engineering Management is commencing in February 2025.

Micro-credentials & CPD Training

The REEdI Team have created a number of Micro-credentials and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) modules aimed to meet the demands of learners, idustry and society. A range of programmes are starting in February 2025, they will be delivered part-time over 1 Semester (up to 12 weeks) in a blended format, and feature online lecturers and in-person practical classes at our Kerry Campus in Tralee.

  • Continuous Improving Mentoring*
  • Data Science for Manufacturing Success
  • Fundamentals of Polymer 3D Printing
  • Certificate in Integrated Manufacturing Engineering Management^
  • Project Management
  • Value Stream Mapping (VSM)*

* These courses can be stacked to gain a Special Purpose Award
^ This course can be stacked with the Certificate in Industry 4.0 and Industrial Internet of Things to gain a BSc (Hons) in Integrated Manufacturing Engineering

100% (Free) and part-funded (up to 80%) places are available for eligible applicants through the ReSHAPE Project and HCI Learner Fee Subsidy. Find out more here

REEdI Engineers in Residence (EiR) industry site visits

The Engineers in Residence, as part of their ongoing commitment to our industry partners have participated in onsite tours of our industry partners. During these sites visits we have had facility tours, we have discussed the work placement for our student engineers and also discussed future collaboration between REEdI and the industry partners.

The REEdI team had a busy 2 days engaging with staff in Johnson & Johnson Vision in Limerick on CPD opportunities available through Munster Technological University
