BEng in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering
The REEdI@MTU BEng (Hons) in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering has been going from strength to strength. In September 2023 we welcomed a new cohort of student engineers to the programme, they have been getting acquainted with the AR and VR technologies and working on their first projects.
As well as their practical and lecturing classes, our second year student engineers have been preparing for their paid work placement through professional developement, refining their CVs and selecting the industry partners they will apply to.
2023/2024 Student Engineers
We are delighted to welcome the future Engineers to Munster Technological University and the REEdI@MTU programme. Exciting times ahead for our new cohort of REEdI student Engineers, joining the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at MTU Kerry Campus, gearing up for an incredible journey. Best of luck to our talented students as they embark on this amazing adventure!
AR & VR
The AR & VR team continue to play an integral role to the REEdI Project, they are involved in outreach events such as the HCI Pillar 3 Mid Term Conference, National Ploughing Championships and the Kerry Science Festival. They support the REEdI Programme from induction of our first year student engineers to engineering challenges. Last summer they took on two student interns to assist with industry projects.
In July, Hans Moolman, Engineering Fellow in Immersive Technologies, presented a lightening pitch representing the REEdI@MTU team at SEFI – European Society for Engineering Education Annual Conference at TU Dublin.
They have been involved in the development of the two programmes within the STEM department, supporting the Pharmaceutical department on creating an Immersive Pilot programme for Research and Development purposes as well as reviewing and implementing Immersive technologies into the Veterinary Science programme.
REEDI Innovation Space
Over the past year at MTU Kerry South Campus, the REEDI team have redeveloped room B109 by creating an innovative space designed to empower students with cutting-edge tools for creativity and problem-solving. This space allows for hands-on learning experiences, allowing students to explore their creativity and develop practical skills crucial for today’s industry’s needs.

Engineering Challenge 2
A huge congratulations to the 2nd year student engineers as they completed their Design Engineering 2 projects. The students were tasked with the mechanical design of an Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) using CAD, key design tools, 3D printing, laser and plasma cutting. These units are capable of carrying a light payload on a defined pathway with obstacle avoidance and emergency stop. What fantastic outcome, great to see collaboration and teamwork throughout the semester, well done to all!
Guest Lecturers
Throughout the academic year REEdI are delighted to host a broad range of guest lecturers who share their knowledge and experience with our student engineers. It is important for the students to hear from industry experts and discover more about the careers and oppotunities available to them. Some of our recent highlights were:
- Tim Crowe, WrxFlo
- Megan Staunton, Astellas Pharma Inc
- Professor Euan Lindsay
- Derry Sheehan,
- Daniel Wells, Spirax Sarco UK and Ireland
- Noor Syed, Astellas Pharma Inc
Student Engineer Industry Site Tours
Site visits make up an essential part of the BEng in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering Degree and our students will visit companies and operations across a variety of sectors throughout 1st and 2nd year before commencing their two-year paid industry placements. Organised by the REEdI lecturers and Engineers in Residence facilitated industry tours of industry partners, these tours have been very successful and have clearly impacted on the students vision of what a career in engineering can look like and highlighted the diversity of roles within industry partners and between industry partners. The student engineers have been very engaged during these visits and many have commented on how enjoyable the visits were.
So far our students have had the opportunity to experience the following:
- Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd
- ESB Ardnacrusha Hydro Station
- Kostal Group
- Stryker
- Dairymaster
- WAZP
N-TUTORR Fellowship Grant
Congratulations to Caren Karamagi and Michael Vieira who were awarded a funding grant under the N-TUTORR Students as Partners in Innovation and Change fellowships programme for their project “Enhancing Teamwork and Assessment: Tuckman’s Model and SPARKPLUS software” which aims to improve team-based assessment.
131 projects from across the technological university sector have been awarded funding grants under the fellowship programme and are worth more than €650,000. The funded projects involve collaboration between learners and staff, and focus on enhancing the experience of students at technological universities across all of N-TUTORR’s core themes.

Bsc in Veterinary Nursing
The Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Nursing at MTU is one of only six colleges providing veterinary nurse training. The first cohort of students started in September 2023 and there has been huge support from the veterinary industry in the establishment of this new programme. Students are being provided with a strong foundation in the principles of veterinary nursing through a blend of traditional learning methods and using Immersive Technology. Students are being given the opportunities to apply the principles of veterinary nursing in practical’s & workshops in the dedicated veterinary nurse clinical skills laboratory throughout the programme and in veterinary practice work placement during 2nd and 3rd year of the programme.
The programme is being assisted by the REEdI Team to develop these unique learning methods through AR & VR technologies and applying similar practices found on the BEng in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering to ensure students are at the forefront of veterinary nursing.
